AgeStrong Series: Sunday, February 5th-March 12th at 4pm

Getting stronger inside and out. In the series we look at improving the physical and psychological aspects of midlife. To build strength we need to ensure quality sleep, nutrition, and a healthy mindset.

The 90 minute sessions are divided into two parts. The first hour is exercise focused, followed by discussion. We will cover the fundamentals of lifting, balance, mobility, plyometrics, and SIT on bikes. The discussion topics will include sleep, nutrition, exercise, and mindset based on the latest research on thriving in midlife. There is a plethora of information out there – let’s simplify it, individualize it, and start getting stronger.

6 Sessions Cost $180

    I have been interested in sport and athletics from I have been interested in sport and athletics from a young age and took part in softball and ringette throughout elementary and high school. I went onto university and studying became my focus. I majored in Kinesiology with a minor in Health and Fitness. I have always been interested in how the body functions well from being active and conversely, what dysfunction can look like from lack of movement.

This interest has carried me through getting my fitness certifications in Spin and Strength Training and well into my career in Disability Management.

I value good physical health as it no doubt keeps my mental health in check too. I stay motivated by varying my workouts and love the feeling of taking the gains earned in the gym, outside to enjoy recreational activities and time with the kids. Gym sessions are appointments in my calendar, much like a work meeting and I make the time to attend.  I make it a priority. I see every workout / physical activity is an investment in myself, in my future.

Over the years, I have had to change my mind-set of tending to work towards this trip or that trip or upcoming event. You need to try to enjoy the process of realizing that good physical health is a life-long commitment and not just for getting in shape for that next vacation or event.

    I struggled with my mental health all through high I struggled with my mental health all through high school and university, and fitness was that one thing that helped me to feel strong again. I grew up surrounded by bodybuilders, but fitness for me has always been about my mind. When I'm moving my body - lifting, running, riding, stretching - I feel like my best self. Fitness gives me an outlet and it helps me feel strong, empowered and capable. 

There are days when I just don't want to;
the alarm goes off just a smidge too early, or I've had a hard day at work, and the last thing I want to do is get off my couch. Someone once said to me "time is going to go by at the same speed whether you work out or not" and I hold that close (though time feels much slower when holding a plank). Some days are harder than others, but I try to remind myself that whether it's an hour, or half an hour, or even 20 minutes...it's going to go by regardless. I might as well fill it with something that helps me feel strong.

    Training was not always part of my life. After hig Training was not always part of my life. After high school I was less active and I realized I needed the accountability of a group. Trying to do it on my own was not working. I started attending spin class. I really enjoyed it so I went more often. I liked moving my body so I added in strength training. I started feeling stronger. 

I train because of the way it makes me feel mentally and physically. I remind myself I am doing this to build a body that's going to take me through all the things life has in store. 

Finding the motivation to go to the gym can be challenging so I book my training ahead of time. I focus on performance goals and I challenge myself to focus on what my body can do now. Things change and we have to adapt and keep moving!

Ask yourself “does this support the life I am trying to create?” What do you want to create – what is your vision for yourself? What do you want to let go of? How do you want to feel? Set boundaries – say no – and make small changes in your day that help you feel well.
