Heart month may have come to an end but that does Heart month may have come to an end but that does not mean heart health has. Pay attention to your heart and your cardiovascular health every day.

The symptoms of a heart attack can be different for men and women. The symptoms for women are often similar to everyday ailments and are subtler than in men. Thus, heat attacks often go misdiagnosed in women.

Men often, but not always, experience the classic signs of a heart attack:
• Pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the centre or the chest that goes away and comes back
• Pain that spreads to the shoulders, neck or arms
• Chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, or shortness of breath

Trigger: Men most often report physical exertion prior to heart attacks.

Women may experience the classic symptoms but they are milder:
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Nausea, vomiting or dizziness
• Back or jaw pain
• Unexplained anxiety, weakness or fatigue
• Palpitations, cold sweats or paleness
• Mild, flu-like symptoms

Trigger: Women most often report emotional stress prior to hear attacks.

Take a moment. A mental health reminder. Holidays Take a moment.

A mental health reminder. Holidays are not all or nothing. While celebrating, decorating, baking, shopping...we can pause to do a mental health check with ourselves and others.  This is a busy time of year. Lots of joy. Lots of expectations. All in the midst of a pandemic. Take a moment and check in with yourself. If you are feeling stressed or worried, ask yourself if whatever is troubling you will matter as much in 7 hours? 7days? 7 weeks or 7 years? Adjust your perspective and your expectations as needed. Remind yourself what matters most to you and focus on that. If you are struggling, remember you are not alone. Reach out to a trusted friend or family member or a help line.

9-1-1 if you are in an emergency.

1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433) if you are considering suicide or are concerned about someone who may be.

310Mental Health Support at 310-6789 (no area code needed) for emotional support, information and resources specific to mental health.

Kid’s Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868 to speak to a professional counsellor, 24 hours a day.

Alcohol & Drug Information and Referral Service at 1-800-663-1441 (toll-free in B.C.) or 604-660-9382 (in the Lower Mainland) to find resources and support.
